One of Eynesbury Rovers’ finest servants has left the club.

Midfielder Tom Coles, who has scored a century of goals during six years with the United Counties League Premier Division club, notified manager Mark Ducket of his intention to leave last weekend.

Coles has joined Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division title-chasers Biggleswade FC. They already have a host of former Eynesbury players in their squad, including defender Darren Woodend who made the same switch earlier this season.

Coles was a promotion-winner with Eynesbury back in the 2013-14 campaign and was their match-winner when lifting the Hunts Senior Cup last season for the first time in 15 years. He headed the only goal of their final triumph against higher-level neighbours St Neots Town.

“Tom has decided to leave the club,” said Ducket. “It was a shock to receive the call, but I have to respect his decision.

“We’ve made no secret of our ambitions to take the club to a higher level by winning promotion, but Tom simply wants to play football and enjoy it.

“He has been a massive part of the club for a long time. He is one of the highest appearance makers in recent years and will quite rightly go down in club folklore as the player who scored the winner in the Hunts Senior Cup Final.

“Tom wasn’t just a terrific player on the pitch, he was also a huge character around the club and his attitude as well as his ability will be missed.”

Coles’ farewell outing came in Rovers’ 2-2 at bottom side Oadby Town last Saturday when they were gifted a late leveller by a goalkeeping error.

Leading scorer Dom Lawless was the beneficiary as he pounced for his 17th goal of the season to spare his side’s blushes.

Eynesbury earlier conceded twice in the opening 10 minutes as they found themselves facing an unlikely defeat. Hayden Bream halved the arrears eight minutes before the break with a fine free-kick, but it wasn’t until the 90th minute that they clawed their way back onto level terms.

“It’s the second weekend running that I’ve seen the worst performance of my reign,” added Ducket. “I was really disappointed with what we produced when going out of the FA Vase the previous Sunday, but we were absolutely abysmal at Oadby.

“It was a huge relief to get out of there with a point. This is a tough challenge and we need to roll our sleeves up.”

Eynesbury have won only one of their last six league games ahead of a home clash against Wellingborough side Whitworths tonight (Tuesday).

They then entertain Kirby Muxloe at Hall Road this Saturday.
