Manager Ollie Drake has called on his red-hot Godmanchester Rovers players to raise their standards even higher.

Drake’s side stretched their unbeaten run to nine matches in all competitions with a smooth 2-0 success against Wroxham in the Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division last Saturday.

Matty Allan’s first-half opener was followed by a clincher from top-scorer Jack Chandler during the second period at the David Wilson Homes Ground. Rovers also kept a clean sheet for the fourth time in five games.

And with a series of four successive league games against teams currently in the bottom half of the standings ahead - starting with a visit to Great Yarmouth Town this Saturday - Drake is keen for further progress.

“I felt we could have scored more goals given the amount of chances we created,” said Drake. “But it was another performance full of maturity and quality to keep our excellent run going.

“Our attacking capabilities were never in doubt, but we had to address our poor defensive record and we’ve done that superbly. The back four and goalkeeper are playing exceptionally well and look a solid unit.

“To only have conceded one goal in our last five games is a fine achievement, but we need to keep striving to better ourselves.

“No team is to be under-estimated and no game can ever be taken for granted. If anything we need to raise our standards even higher to ensure that doesn’t happen against sides lower in the table.

“Our unbeaten run stands at nine games now and we’re determined to make sure it gets into double figures.”

Rovers can do that tomorrow night (Wednesday) when they go to lower-level strugglers Wisbech St Mary in the opening round of the Hinchingbrooke Cup.

And while the Fenland venue has not been a successful venue for Drake in the past, he is confident his squad can help to put that right as the begin a quest for trophy glory in a re-arranged clash which was postponed back in December.

“I lost at Wisbech St Mary when I managed the Newmarket Town Under 18 side and was also beaten on both my visits there with Hardwick in the Cambs League,” reflected Drake.

“It hasn’t been a happy hunting ground for me, but I know my boys will do all they can to get a result.

“We spoke about the Hinchingbrooke Cup as a group a little while ago and it is a trophy we’d like to win. We’ll be having a proper go at it.”
