Captain Joe Furness came up trumps as Godmanchester Rovers were made to sweat for their latest success.

Furness struck the decisive blow with 10 minutes to go as Rovers shook off bottom side FC Clacton at the David Wilson Homes Ground last Saturday.

The 2-1 triumph extended new player-boss Chris Hyem’s unbeaten record to six Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division games and allowed his side to leap into the top 10.

Hyem admitted: “We dominated despite not being at our best, but we couldn’t take the chances we created.

“Thankfully Joe came up with a late goal to make sure we picked up three points, but we should really be turning teams like this over a lot more comfortably than we did on Saturday.

“But the positive is that we found a way to win and kept our good run going.

“Getting up into the top 10 is a nice boost and we have the potential to continue pushing on.”

Arran Mackay had already seen a couple of chances go begging before FC Clacton hit the front against the run of play after a quarter of an hour, but the in-form frontman struck for the sixth time in three matches to equalise.

Rovers were much-improved following a half-time rollicking from assistant boss David Hurst, but they had to wait until late on to break through again as Furness thumped in an angled drive from the left edge of the penalty area.

Rovers host Kirkley & Pakefield at the David Wilson Homes Ground this Saturday – a match Hyem describes as ‘a massive test’.

The two sides battled out a 1-1 draw in the reverse fixture last month.
