St Ives Town manager Ricky Marheineke is attempting to bring one of his promotion heroes back to the club.
Marheineke has slapped in a seven-day approach for strike ace Danny Watson, who fired 18 goals to help Saints to glory in the Southern League Division One (Central) play-offs last season. The most important of those was an equaliser in their play-off final triumph against AFC Rushden & Diamonds back in May.
And while Watson chose to move on ahead of the club’s historic first campaign at Step 3 level, he is now seen as the possible solution to St Ives’ goalscoring problems.
They have found the net only twice in their last seven games in all competitions – and only 10 times in 12 league matches in total this term - while Watson has been scoring freely for new club AFC Kempston Rovers at Step 4.
Marheineke said: “Danny was a terrific player for us last season and we wouldn’t have been anywhere near promotion without his goals.
“We desperately need a prolific goalscorer to give ourselves a better chance of winning games of football and climbing the Premier Division table.
“There were no hard feelings on either side when Danny chose to move on in the summer. He got a better package to play closer to his base at Bedford Town and although that didn’t work out, he has been doing very well for Kempston.
“I don’t mind admitting that I would like to bring him back to St Ives, but I don’t know whether it is something that appeals to him. I’ll find out when I get the chance to speak to him.”
But another striker has headed through the ProEdge Westwood Road exit.
Andrew Phillips, who has been out of form this season, has departed and is understood to be wanted by a Dunstable Town side flying high in third position in the Southern League Premier Division.
Goalkeeper Ollie Sutton has returned to St Ives following a spell at Bedford Town.
Saints entertain Frome tomorrow as they search for a first league win since August. A trip to Hayes & Yeading follows on Tuesday.
