Boss Jimmy Brattan admitted a failure to convert chances and stick to their gameplan cost Huntingdon Town two valuable United Counties League points yesterday.

Town had to settle for a 1-1 draw against struggling Bugbrooke in a Division One clash at Jubilee Park after conceding a late equaliser following a mix-up between goalkeeper Quincy Shorunmu and a defender.

And Brattan was quick to accept that his side only had themselves to blame after fluffing a host of excellent opportunities to increase a lead provided by James Seymour’s first-half goal before going off script in the second period.

“It is definitely a case of two points lost,” said Brattan. “We had enough chances to put the game beyond reach in the first half, but didn’t capitalise on them and it came back to haunt us when Bugbrooke got level with 10 minutes to go.

“I lost count of the number of opportunities we created before seeming to abandon our gameplan halfway through the second half. That’s something we’ll need to address.

“We need to start punishing teams when dominating a game in the way we did against Bugbrooke.”

Huntingdon were successful on home turf last Wednesday when beating another Step 6 side – St Neots Town Reserves – in the opening round of the Hinchingbrooke Cup.

Liam Rodden hit the only goal midway through the second half and Brattan was quick to insist his side ought to have triumphed more emphatically.

He added: “We should have scored a lot more than one goal in all honesty. It’s another game we dominated and the scoreline was very flattering for St Neots Town Reserves.”

Huntingdon will face either Ely City or Bourne Town in the next round of that competition later in the season.

More immediately their focus is on a Saturday trip to Blackstones in Division One. It is a second visit to the Stamford side of the season following a controversial extra-time defeat in the UCL League KO Cup back in September when they had two players sent off.

Bob Warby has stepped down from his roles as vice chairman and director of football at Huntingdon.

Warby, who had a 15-month stint as the club’s first-team manager from January 2016 to April 2017, will still serve as chairman of the Huntingdon Rowdies colts’ club.
