Godmanchester Rovers boss Ollie Drake admitted he was left embarrassed by the club’s Thurlow Nunn League Challenge Cup exit.

Rovers were thumped 5-1 in a quarter-final to forget at Thetford Town last Tuesday night – despite leading in the first half thanks to an Arran Mackay goal.

The sides were level at the break, but Rovers were blown away in the second period when Drake described his side as ‘non-existent’.

He said: “It was a cup we desperately wanted to win, but a big chunk of our season has now gone.

“It was a very, very disappointing performance – especially in the second half. “We were nowhere near the standards we have set for ourselves this season.

“I cannot defend anyone after a display like that. We were embarrassingly poor.”

Rovers are still stewing over their cup exit after seeing a Premier Division trip to Fakenham postponed last Saturday.

They are now scheduled to entertain the Norfolk side at the David Wilson Homes Ground this Saturday in what is likely to be just a second home outing of 2018 following a series of postponements.

“It’s far from ideal to have to dwell on the disappointment of going out of the League Challenge Cup for so long,” added Drake. “But I’m sure the lads will give me the right reaction.”

Rovers sit sixth in the Premier Division standings. They boast matches in hand on the three teams above them and the seven sides sitting below them.
