Huntingdon’s delight at a second successive away triumph was dampened by another potentially serious injury blow.

Stags ran in eight tries as they thumped newly promoted Old Laurentians 60-7 in Midlands Division One East last Saturday.

But prop Steven Chantler picked up what is feared to be a major knee ligament injury only a week after Tad Chapman suffered a broken leg in a season-opening success at Northampton Old Scouts.

Head coach Damien Whales admitted: “To start the season with back-to-back away wins is very pleasing, but the same can’t be said about losing players to bad injuries.

“Hopefully Steven’s injury won’t prove to be as serious as was feared on Saturday, but we’ll know more once he has had further medical checks during this week.”

A couple of Dan Malem penalties edged Stags ahead inside the opening 10 minutes, but a defensive lapse allowed the hosts in for a converted try as they briefly hit the front.

But that proved to be the only points conceded as Huntingdon went on to dominate. Jack Skidmore smashed through to touch down before further scores from James Reid and Tango Morton put them on top at the interval.

Plenty more scores followed in the second period as the first of two Duncan Low tries opened the floodgates. Rory Parker and Mauro Almeida also went over before Richard North capped a fine display in the final play of the game. Malem guided over seven conversions.

Stags take to their home turf at the Racecourse for the first time when entertain Paviors this Saturday (3pm).

“It will be our toughest test yet and it is one we are relishing,” added Whales.
