RICKY Marheineke has started to put his own stamp on the Huntingdon Town squad he inherited from Al Lenihan last month.

His charges picked up their first win in the third game under his tenure on Saturday, when they defeated Northampton Sileby Rangers 2-1 at Jubilee Park.

They had to do it the hard way, though, and were a goal down after five minutes when Jack Bartley punished a Jake Waterworth error.

Adam Lacey hauled Huntingdon level on 35 minutes, but Ryan Spencer’s dismissal left the home side a man down for the closing stages.

But debutant Ondre Odain - on as a substitute - struck the winner eight minutes from time after Dan Drane had rounded the keeper to give Huntingdon their first win in seven games.

Marheineke said: “It’s important that we got that first win as quickly as possibly to give us that extra bit of confidence.

“With 15 minutes to go, with 10 men, and the score at 1-1, you do think that you might go on to lose it and maybe luck isn’t on your side. But, as it was, we did fantastically well.”

As well as striker Odain, midfielder Chris Talton has arrived at Huntingdon from Yaxley and joins fellow new recruits in wide man Louie Medwynter (Blackstones), striker Grant Robbins (Newmarket) and midfielder Ben Colmer (Godmanchester Rovers).

Among those leaving Jubilee Park in recent weeks have been Scott Kingsbury (Eynesbury), Stuart Eason (Kings Cliffe) and Chris Brown (Oundle).

Huntingdon, who are still fourth bottom in the table, go to bottom club Buckingham on Saturday.

Ahead of the game, Marheineke said: “We need to make sure we continue to do what we’ve been doing for the last three weeks and I’m optimistic that, with this group of players, we will win more games than we lose.”
