FA Vase Third Round

Epsom and Ewell 1

St Neots Town 2

ST NEOTS Town progressed to the Fourth Round of the FA Vase with a professional performance at Epsom and Ewell.

The game was played at the third time of asking, and Neots had to come back from a goal behind to dispatch their Combined Counties Premier opponents.

After dominating the opening 20 minutes, Saints handed Epsom the initiative when defender Will Fordham failed to control a long ball falling to him. Home striker Dave Stevens pounced on the mistake and slotted home to make it 1-0.

Saints were back level just before half time when Lewis Webb netted the equaliser their play had deserved.

Despite their possession in the second half Neots struggled to put their chances away, but did snatch the winner through Lewis Hilliard, seeing them through to a tie in the Fourth Round at Gresley of the East Midlands Counties League.

St Neots manager Dennis Greene felt the 2-1 scoreline had not reflected his team’s control of the game.

“Such was our domination that I don’t think they had a single cross into the box or a shot on target apart from the one we gifted them,” he said.

“It was relatively comfortable for us, and we had plenty of chances to score.

“Gresley in the next round will be a tougher game – they at the top of their league and going well, so they’ll be a challenge.

“But it’s the last 32, so we’ve got to expect that the games will be getting harder.”
