ST NEOTS Town flexed their goalscoring muscle with a demolition job on strugglers Rothwell, which brought them their biggest league victory for three years.

Rothwell could not live with the firepower of St Neots, and did not test Saints goalkeeper Tim Trebes until the final minute of the game.

Manager Dennis Greene’s side, unchanged for the first time this season, shared the goals around, with five players getting their name on the scoresheet.

It took Neots 27 minutes to break the deadlock, but when the floodgates opened, they stayed open. Shane Tolley notched the first, before Dan Jacob and Will Fordham scored before half time. Lewis Hilliard, Tolley again and a double from substitute Roy Essandoh completed the rout.

Neots dominated their modest opposition from the start, with Junior Kanuda skilfully pulling the strings in midfield and Dan Jacob named man of the match for his torture of the Rothwell defence. They created several chances early on and could have opened the scoring long before Tolley got the ball rolling.

Lewis Webb had two early off-target efforts and Tony Scully almost scored with a clever 40-yard lob after a misplaced clearance which had to be turned over at full stretch.

Tolley also lobbed wide, but was on target just before the half hour mark when he provided a crisp finish to Hilliard’s cross.

Four minutes later Hilliard fed Jacob, whose close control and low finish beat the home keeper at his near post.

Neots had a penalty shout turned down shortly after, but they extended their lead before half time through Fordham.

The centre-back won the ball inside his own half and powered past two tackles to score his first league goal for St Neots.

Neots were evading the Rothwell defence with ease, and Tolley passed up a chance early in the second period. Kanuda sliced the defence apart minutes later with a through-ball which Hilliard finished expertly.

Des Byrne replaced Kanuda shortly after, and though Rothwell shot over through Matt Redding, Neots had their fifth on 66 minutes when Tolley beat the keeper to Adam Jones’s pass to notch his second.

The introduction of Essandoh signalled Neots were not letting up, and he prodded home Will Fordham’s blocked shot. He added the seventh in the final minute, scoring from substitute Dan French’s cross to complete Rothwell’s miserable afternoon.
