ST NEOTS golfers achieved the highlight of the club’s 120 years by securing a place at an international tournament final in Spain.

Colin Mynott held his nerve on the first hole of a sudden-death shoot-out to put his team through to the Mail on Sunday National Finals, to be held in Andalucia in November.

Mynott’s win ensured Neots made it to the final four, out of more than 1,500 clubs, at the expense of Ashton in Makerfield GC.

The match at Marriott Worsley Park saw the five-man St Neots team take the clubhouse lead when Steve Searle won the first match 4&3.

Within minutes it was all change as Ashton won two matches 2&1. St Neots’ hopes looked slim, with Nick Gowling four holes down with five to play.

However, Gowling mounted a stunning fightback to take the last five holes to square the tie at 2-2. James Bradford secured a half in the final match to force extra holes, before Mynott won the match to make club history.

Club secretary Mike Truswell said: “This is by far the best achievement by the club, which is 120 years old this year. We are the oldest club in Cambridgeshire – so let’s hope we can celebrate in style in Spain.”

St Neots hero Gowling said: “I was aware that the match was drifting away and just tried to focus. After winning 14 and 15 I felt the match was coming back to me, but I admit I got a good break on the 18th to win the match.”

He added that he expected many St Neots to travel to the El Rompedo golf resort to cheer on the team on November 22 and 23.

“Our support has been the best throughout the nine rounds we have played, and there are already plenty of supporters who have booked their flights to the finals in Andalucia.”
