St Neots Town 5-2 Cogenhoe United

FIVE more goals secured three more points for St Neots Town, who went six clear of rivals King’s Lynn at the top of the UCL Premier with victory over spirited Cogenhoe at The Hunts Post Community Stadium.

There was a debut for right-back for Jack Bradshaw, signed last week from Blue Square South outfit Maidenhead United.

Saints were two up after a quarter-of-an-hour with Dan Jacob at the double. He opened the scoring on 12 minutes after exchanging passes with Shane Tolley, and poached his second four minutes later, after Stefan Moore’s snap-shot had been blocked on the line.

A third Neots goal before half-time effectively signed and sealed the deal. Dan Thompson’s mistimed challenge from behind on Moore resulted in a penalty being awarded, which Lewis Webb converted.

Substitute Sam Heavey cut the deficit on 52 minutes and gave Cogenhoe a lifeline, after Junior Kanuda was caught in possession.

But they were unable to mount a memorable second half comeback and the hosts’ three-goal cushion was finally restored with 10 minutes remaining as Moore punished a misplaced Ashley Fleming clearance.

United did grab themselves a second on 87 minutes when Lewis Leslie converted a Karl Bates’ cross, but Saints had the last word in added time with two substitutes combining – Kieran Davies crossing for Roy Essandoh – to head home a fifth.

On Saturday, attention turns back to the FA Vase, with St Neots at home to Essex Senior League outfit Burnham Ramblers in the second round proper.

n St Neots coasted into the quarter-final of the UCL League Cup following their 8-1 home victory over Northampton ON Chenecks.

Essandoh (3), Davies (2), Jacob, Lewis Hilliard and Bryn Williams bagged the goals for the hosts. The fourth goal of the evening was scored by Williams and was Saints’ 100th goal of the season so far in all competitions.
