St Neots Town 2 Stewarts & Lloyds Corby 0

GOALS in each half from Tony Scully and substitute Roy Essandoh fired Saints four points clear at the top of the UCL Premier Division.

Although not at their free-scoring best, the win means Neots remain unbeaten 13 games in, as well as breaking the 50-goal barrier in the league.

That particular honour fell the way of Scully as the hosts took the lead 27 minutes in.

Lewis Hilliard sent a short pass into the penalty box and Scully twisted and turned before prodding the ball below the keeper’s dive.

Visiting stopper Richard Lavin produced the save of the match to deny Junior Kanuda, while the hosts felt they should have doubled their advantage a minute before the break, when Hilliard’s cross from the right was met by Stefan Moore’s firm downward header.

A combination of goalkeeper and defender scooped the ball clear from behind the line but, with the referee not well placed, play was allowed to continue.

Manager Dennis Greene gave 20-year-old winger Kieran Davies, signed last week from Blackstones, a 25-minute cameo as he came on for Scully in the second half.

And it was Davies who provided the cross for the Saints’ second goal, which arrived in stoppage time, and was scored by Essandoh, who himself had just come on for Moore minutes earlier.

With King’s Lynn Town not in league action, victory also meant Neots were able to increase their margin over them to six points.

Next up is a trip to seventh-place Boston Town on Saturday.

? The win over S&L Corby followed on from an impressive 5-1 victory at Irchester United four days earlier.

St Neots came from a goal down to brush aside the challenge of Irchester, who went into the game second in the league. Tom Mills got the home side’s goal, but Shane Tolley levelled on half time.

Goals in the second period from Hilliard, Rob Hughes, Lewis Webb and Tolley again – making it 20 goals in 11 games for Saints – ensured the three points travelled back to the Hunts Post Community Stadium.
