ST NEOTS Golf Club have fallen at the last hurdle in the Mail on Sunday National Golf Championships.
They were beaten 4.5-0.5 by Vale of Glamorgan Golf Club today (Wednesday) at the El Rompido Golf Resort in Huelva, southern Spain.
The team of Colin Mynott, Michael Round, James Bradford, Nick Gowling and Steve Searle had already made St Neots history by advancing further in the competition than ever before.
Club secretary Mike Truswell said that everyone at the club was proud of what their golfers had achieved, despite the defeat.
“Everyone is bitterly disappointed at coming second, but it’s like being the runner-up in the FA Cup final,” he said. “But for a small club like ours to have made it through to the final, given all the other clubs that entered, is a great achievement.
“We’ve never got beyond the third round before, and I’m not aware of any other club from Cambridgeshire who have ever got that far.”
