St Ives fighter Bradley Smith didn’t make a meal of his second professional fight – despite feeling the effects of a Nando’s!

The 18 year-old lightweight admits he over-did the chicken and mash before breezing to a points success over Northern Irish opponent Alec Bazza at the York Hall in London last Saturday night.

But a full stomach didn’t stop him delivering a stylish boxing display to extend his unbeaten record.

Smith said: “I went to Nando’s straight after the weigh-in but I probably over-ate and then drank too much water as well.

“I felt really bloated but it didn’t cost me. There is a lesson to be learned though about how I refuel before a fight.

“Bazza came in there to have a go, but I didn’t get drawn into a war. I just did the basics, used my boxing skills and got a comfortable win.

“I thought I might get him down in the final round after he walked onto a big right-hand and wobbled, but I already had the fight won so there was no point in rushing in and risking getting caught by a stupid shot.”

Smith felt his performance vindicated his decision to return to training locally with St Ives Boxing Academy supremo Steve Whitwell.

He had been working under Barry Smith in London when making a winning debut back in July, but returned to his roots for financial reasons.

He added: “We had a plan and I listened to every word that came from the corner.

“I think I’ve got people talking about me and that’s a good thing after only two fights.

“I showed in my debut that I can go toe-to-toe and this time I showed I can box as well even though I felt bloated.

“It’s so far so good, but I know there is a lot more to come.

“Coming back to training locally was definitely the right decision as Steve has got the best out of me.”

Smith expects to return to the ring on the next Goodwin Promotions bill at the York Hall on December 5.
