ST NEOTS Saloon Car driver Simon Green is celebrating a successful debut season in the Ford Saloon Car Championship.
Green's build-up to his final race of the season was disrupted when some vital car parts failed to arrive until the evening before race day. However, a stint in the garage until 3am, plus a three-hour drive to Chester, meant Green was ready for the 10.15am sign on time.
Green, 24, who drives in Class C of the Championship, came third in the qualifying session, a fine achievement given his late-night repair work.
In the longer race, Green battled his way into second position and shrugged off a big spin on the final lap to take an impressive second position.
Green is now 17 points clear of third place in the Class C Championship and is hoping he can hold on to second position when the final round is raced later this month.
A tired but happy Green said: "After the drama of only just getting the car ready for the race it was great to come away with a good result. As for the season's racing, it has been a dream come true.
"I've had some brilliant races with all the competitors in my class and even with some of the cars in higher classes. I'm looking forward to returning to the championship again next year and I'll be building an engine over the winter to get me on terms with the front runners.
"I'd like to thank everyone that's supported me this year, mainly Steve Scott at Sandy-based A1 Rallysport, Steve Papworth at St Neots-based A1 Gearboxes and Andy Muchie at Allprep Vehicle Solutions and also all my family and friends that have helped me through the year."
