HUNTINGDON Gymnastics Club’s year to remember continued with a clutch of medals at the British Gymnastics Championships and Masters in Leicester at the weekend.

The club’s big names won medals, but there were also excellent showings from Huntingdon’s younger and more inexperienced gymnasts.

Twelve-year-old Tony Duchars started the medal rush with a bronze on the pommel horse in the Boys category. In the all around competition, Duchars was 18th, behind team-mate Benji Eyre in 14th.

Louis Smith comfortably won the senior gold medal on the pommel horse, qualifying in top spot for the Masters Championships for the eight highest-scoring gymnasts in all age groups.

Commonwealth star Luke Folwell finished fifth in the all-around competition, qualifying for the Masters competition for floor, rings and vault. Fellow senior Ahmahd Thomas finished 10th in the all-around, and made reserve on rings and high bar for the Masters.

In the Masters final, Folwell won bronze medals in the rings and vault, but Smith did not compete.

Fourteen-year-olds William Mas and Harrison Cooper-Lewis completed near-faultless routines in the Intermediate age group all-around competition.

The two ranked ninth and 10th respectively, with Cooper-Lewis taking bronze on the pommel horse.

Junior Sam Oldham won the all-around junior title, and claimed silver in the Masters high bar competition. Huntingdon team-mate Cameron MacKenzie finished fifth in all-around, and was a Masters reserve in the pommel and high bar.

Australian gymnast Mike Taylor, 15, completed his year guesting at HGC with a good performance in the Youth all-around competition.

Boys coaches Paul Hall and Ben Howells said the results once again demonstrated the strength in depth at Huntingdon Gym Club, with the club’s elite gymnasts being backed up by emerging younger talent.

The club’s gymnasts now look forward to the Glasgow Grand Prix in two weeks’ time and December’s Bumbo Gymnastics Cup in South Africa.

N HUNTINGDON Gym Club’s female gymnasts ran up a hat-trick of victories at the weekend, as Charlotte Elson, Victoria Alexander and Georgia Berry each won their age categories in the Cambridgeshire County Level Five competition held at the club.
