GODMANCHESTER Rovers live to fight another day in the FA Vase after their late comeback, but Huntingdon Town bowed out after their defeat at Oadby Town on Saturday

Godmanchester Rovers 6 Northampton Spencer 3

GODMANCHESTER Rovers will be plotting revenge after dramatically swatting aside Northampton Spencer in extra time in the FA Vase on Saturday.

Despite going 2-0 down in the second half of their second qualifying round match at Bearscroft lane, Rovers rallied and hit their United Counties Premier League opponents for six to set up a first round proper tie at Loughborough University, the team that dumped them out of the FA Cup earlier this month.

Managers Neville Nania and David Hurst were without injured trio Rob Mackney, Tom Moran and Steven Hurst and the game was pretty dull for half an hour before Spencer made their breakthrough when Rovers were taking a nap.

On 55 minutes the visitors doubled their lead from the penalty spot and looked to have the tie sewn up.

However, Rovers pushed forward in a new 4-4-2 shape after the managers shuffled their pack and with time quickly running out John Hall headed home a Paul Bass corner. There was only two minutes remaining when Matty Haniver met another Bass cross for the equaliser.

Into extra time it went and pretty soon Rovers were 3-2 up through Mike Hyam.

Martin Prior got his first goal for the club to make it 4-2 in the second half of extra time before getting another soon after to make it 5-2.

The excellent Bass made it six before the end.

The first round proper match at Loughborough will be played on Saturday, Ocober 21st.

Rovers are back in United Counties League Division One action first though and are away at Cornard United on Saturday.

Oadby Town 3 Huntingdon Town 2

HUNTINGDON’S disappointing run continued when they were knocked out of the FA Vase at the second qualifying round stage at Oadby Town on Saturday.

The Croms went down 3-2 and have now lost four games in a row – this one following defeats to Rushden & Higham United in the League, Peterbrough Northern Star in the League Cup and Daventry Town in the FA Cup.

They were 1-0 down at half time in Leicestershire but Dan Drane equalised in the second half before the East Midlands Counties Premier Division side pulled away with a further two goals.

Jamie Blackwell got a second for Town late on but by then the goal could only be a consolation.

This Saturday Ricky Marheineke will be hoping his team can get back on track when they play Sileby Rangers at home in Division One of the United Counties League.
