TEENAGER George Meredith starred as Grafham Water Sailing Club hosted the 2009 RYA Volvo East Zone Championships at the weekend.
More than 80 boats battled it out for bragging rights in four classes, with 14-year-old Meredith bagging the club's best result with a third place in the Topper dinghy class.
Meredith is already in the Junior National squad and finished seventh place in July's Junior World Championships in Austria, and he enhanced his reputation with three determined performances against the region's top youngsters.
With each sailor's two best results counting towards the final standings, Meredith could afford to attack, and he produced great form in race one to finish fourth in the 31-boat field.
A sixth-place finish in the second race dampened Meredith's hopes, but he picked himself up for the third race of the day.
But his father Neil said: "After the second race he was a bit disappointed, but that put him in a determined mood for the third race, and he was keen to show the field his worth."

His focus paid off as he won, with clear water to his nearest challengers.
When the final results had been clarified, Meredith finished just one point behind the top two of Bryony Bennett-Lloyd and Annabel Cattermole for an excellent third-place finish.
Grafham's Rebecca Stowe (11th), Elizabeth Parrish (17th) and William Massey (18th) also featured in the same class, while in the Optimist class Linnea Barreng finished ninth from the 26 starters with Hannah Stowe inside the top twenty.
