To say Martin Field is a frustrated man would be an understatement. The joint manager of Eynesbury Rovers was veritably fuming when he spoke to The Hunts Post on Tuesday afternoon.

Having played just one solitary game so far this year, as the club pushes for promotion from Division One of the United Counties League, Eynesbury were quite incredibly without a game on Saturday because their opponents, ON Chenecks from Northamptonshire, had a county cup match against Burton Park Wanderers.

“It’s absolutely incredible – it is a typical FA rule, county cups and league cups taking precedence. It doesn’t make sense,” said Field. “We haven’t even got a game tonight,” he added. “Yet Harrowby, who we have three games in hand over, have a game while we waste another day.”

He has a point. Eynesbury have 17 league games left and just over two months to fit them all in. This means Field and Eynesbury have no time to think about getting through the quarter-finals and semis of the Hinchingbrooke Cup to meet Huntingdon Town at Jubilee Park. You might have thought the manager would be delighted to get the chance take on Seb Hayes’s side in a Huntingdonshire derby finale. But with two games yet to play to even get to the final – the first against Saffron Walden Town – the manager admits his disinterest with brutal honesty.

“We have 17 games of the league season left and our priory, it always has been, is promotion. Truthfully, I have no interest in the Hinchingbrooke Cup right now. “We should have played our quarter-final tie a couple of weeks ago. We could have played it tonight. Now they want to play it on a Saturday. Last thing I need is a cup game on a Saturday.

“We need to get our heads down and we need to get through the rest of the season undefeated – like we did last season from January.”

Oadby are top from Harrowby by 12 points but have played one more game. Eynesbury, in third, are a further eight points behind Harrowby but have four games in hand over them and three over the leaders. On Tuesday night, Oadby Town went to Thrapston Town and won 8-0.

So, who are the next two games supposed to be against? Oadby are at Eynesbury on Saturday and on Tuesday they are at home to Harrowby.

Quite simply, it could be make or break time. These are two massive games for the club and all concerned. Promotion is on the line. Just don’t mention the Hinchingbrooke Cup and everything will be fine.
