Martin Field has questioned whether his Eynesbury Rovers players have the ‘mental strength’ to win promotion this season.

After coming third in Division One of the United Counties League last year, Eynesbury are once again in the shake-up for promotion to the Premier Division, but the former Biggleswade Town boss is worried his players might not be in the right frame of mind to secure the second automatic promotion place – with leaders Oadby Town having won the title, all bar the shouting.

“At the end of the day, it’s in our hands,” Field told The Hunts Post. “We have 10 games left and we need to keep on winning games. But are we capable? I’m not so sure. There is a question mark for me over the players’ mental strength.

“I know it’s boring – but we will take one game at a time. We will play one and then move on to the next one.”

Eynesbury are currently third in the table but have four games in hand over second-placed Harrowby United, who are 10 points ahead. On paper, at least, Eynesbury look to be the favourites for second place. Harrowby still have to go to Oadby and have further tough games away at ON Chenecks and Lutterworth Athletic. Their next five games are all away and they only have six of them.

Eynesbury on the other hand are at home to Peterborough Sports this Saturday and have played Oadby twice already. They lost both times but now have the chance to put those and other recent slip-ups behind them.

Last week’s 1-1 draw at Burton Park Wanderers was disappointing, but they got back on track with a 3-1 win at home to Wellingborough Whitworth on Saturday. Lee Bassett, Steve Smith and Jack Weedon shared the goals and it is the prolific striker Bassett who is their not-so-secret weapon. The 25-year-old turned down moves to various clubs in the summer to stay at Eynesbury and has scored 30 league goals in 32 games. If Bassett plays in all 10 of Eynesbury’s games, he can be the one to fire them to promotion. “There’s no doubt we have underachieved this season,” said Field. “If we had made the slip-ups last season we have made this time we would be miles out of it by now.

“But we are not – we are still in a good position. I would rather be in our position than Harrowby’s.”

On Tuesday night, St Neots Town Youth & Saints did Eynesbury a little bit of a favour when they drew with fourth-placed Lutterworth Athletic 0-0 at home.
