Godmanchester manager Matt Clements is refusing to give up on his promotion dream.

Rovers powered to a seventh successive Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division win last Saturday when triumphing 3-0 at Gorleston courtesy of Luke Brown’s first goal for the club, Charlie Bowen’s strike and an own goal.

That left them 14 points behind table-toppers Norwich United with a couple of games in hand.

United snubbed the chance of promotion last term after powering to title glory by 26 points, but club officials have confirmed in the Norfolk media that they intend to go up if clinching the crown again.

Goddy finished as runners-up last term, but had failed to complete the necessary improvements to their David Wilson Homes Ground to go up themselves.

They are now carrying out work to ensure there is no repeat of that scenario in the current campaign.

Clements said: “There are all sorts of things said and written at this time of year.

“Norwich United’s intentions have no effect on what we are trying to do - and that is have the best season we possibly can.

“I still believe we have a chance of winning the title if we can keep our current run going. We’ve won seven league games in a row, we’ve beaten Norwich United twice and we have the matches in hand to go second in the table.

“We’ve continued picking up results despite losing a couple of big players and we have plenty of momentum behind us.

“It will obviously be tough trying to reel Norwich United in, but it’s a case of never saying never.”

The first step for Rovers is climbing into third place by beating Haverhill at the David Wilson Homes Ground tonight (Wednesday). They then face another home test this Saturday when Long Melford are the visitors.

Clements has hailed goalkeeper Niall Conroy for snubbing St Neots Town to stay at Rovers.

“Niall is the best goalkeeper in our league and proves it week in, week out,” added Clements.

“St Neots put in an approach for him, but he has opted to stay. I have a lot of respect for him for doing that.”
