A FORMER Hinchingbrooke School pupil travelled with the Great Britain national baseball team to Somerset last weekend to play against a selection of players from the English cricket team.

Matthew Maitland, 22, from Catworth has played in both the junior and senior national baseball teams, but his opponents on Saturday (4), the Marcus Threscothick Bangers, would have been more at home on a green than a diamond.

The unusual combination of teams played as part of a fun day which raised money for the Children's Hospice Southwest. The fun-day comes as part of Threscothick's testimonial year.

The baseball team finished victorious, but the cricketers acquitted themselves well despite playing an unfamiliar game.

Matthew said: "It was a most enjoyable day, and a great opportunity for the Great Britain Baseball team to showcase baseball to the public and raise its profile in this country.

"It was also a privilege for me to put on the uniform and represent Great Britain again.
