Lord Protector lift trophy

Sunday side follow up on league success with Joe Mansfield Cup triumph

SUNDAY League kings Lord Protector capped a phenomenal campaign by smashing New Inn 5-0 to lift the Joe Mansfield Cup.

Jamie Blackwell and Mark Browne bagged a brace apiece while Ben Squires also scored at Jubilee Park to secure a league and cup double.

It followed on from their triumphant championship-winning season in the St Neots & District Sunday League, which secured them back-to-back titles having reigned supreme in Division One the season before.

Club secretary Bill Small said: “We’re delighted with how we’ve done this season and winning back-to-back titles is something that hasn’t been achieved for some considerable period of time.”

Only Barley Mow St Neots denied Protector the treble, as they slipped to a 5-2 defeat in the Ernie Childs Cup final with Luke Claxton and Blackwell netting in that clash, played at Eynesbury Rovers.

And now Protector, who currently play their home games at Riverside Park, have been invited to stage their home games at Jubilee Park, home of Huntingdon Town, next season by new chairman Paul Hunt.
