HIGH jumper Robbie Grabarz successfully negotiated the qualification rounds with comparative ease at the Olympic Stadium in East London last night (Sunday) – and will be one of the favourites for a medal on Tuesday.

The 24-year-old who was brought up in St Neots, was able to clear heights of 2.21 metres, 2.26m and 2.29m at the first attempt to make sure of his spot in the finals, which will begin at 7pm.

Grabarz has enjoyed a brilliant season, setting a new personal best of 2.36m in June which put him second in the world rankings for the season.

And he survived any possible scares with an easy path through to the final, where it is hoped he will be able to win another medal for Team GB.

One fan, a certain Mr Dick Forsbury, who changed his sport for ever when he invented the ‘Fosbury flop’ and won the competition in the 1968 Olympics, said Grabarz can certainly win a medal – but it may not be a gold.

Fosbury is backing the American Jesse Williams to jump highest on Tuesday, and said: “Williams had an awful day in Beijing, Ivan Ukhov is unpredictable, and Andrey Silnov is the defending champion.

“But a home crowd matters and I think Grabarz will probably get a silver behind Williams, who has a point to prove.”
