Long Buckby 1-5 St Neots Town ---

ST NEOTS Town manager Steve Lomas has conceded that the UCL Premier Division title has slipped beyond his team, despite a thumping win over Long Buckby.

With leaders Daventry Town overcoming St Ives Town 3-0, Neots remained four points behind having played three games more, and Lomas said that time had run out on Neots' promotion bid.

However he said his team should still be proud of their season.

He said: "We think Daventry are going to win it now, because it would need a huge slip-up from them now for us to have a chance.

"We have to hold our hands up and say congratulations to them for the form they have shown all season.

"But we have a lot to be proud of, because we have had a great season. If we can win our remaining three games we would finish on 95 points, which is a colossal number to have as runners-up."

Lomas said he was particularly pleased with the team spirit that has developed in a squad that has seen a high turnover of players this season.

"I really can't speak highly enough of the players, and the commitment they have shown for each other this year. We have come a long way in a year.

"This is a club that's looking to move up the divisions, and I think we have a team here that could compete at a higher level."

On the subject of his own future, Lomas said he was happy to remain at the club, on the understanding that he could explore options to manage full-time if they came up.

He added: "St Neots has been a fantastic opportunity for me, and it is a great club with great people, but I have always been honest and open. I want to get my qualifications and get a full-time management job if the opportunity comes up."

Neots made light work of fourth-placed Long Buckby on Saturday, with five different scorers getting on the board.

Dan Jacobs gave Saints the lead after seven minutes, and Adam Jones added a second on the half hour.

Craig Kelly pulled a goal back for Buckby early in the second half, but Saints put their foot on the accelerator to assert themselves.

Shane Wyllie scored on 73 minutes, riding two tackles and firing home, and Dan French's left-foot volley tied it up five minutes later. Lewis Webb completed the scoring with a last-minute penalty after a handball.
