LOLA achieved their best results for a generation at last weekend's Le Mans 24hrs.

The Lola Aston Martin of Stefan Mucke, Jan Charouz and Thomas Enge was the fastest petrol-powered car in the race, finishing fourth in the LMP1 standings.

In the LMP2 class, the Judd-powered Lola LMP2 Coupe driven by Xavier Pompidou, Jonny Kane and Benjamin Leuenberger took second place.

LMP1 driver Stefan Mucke said praised Lola's efforts in producing the Lola Aston Martin.

"It was a fantastic race for us and the Lola was wonderfully quick from start to finish. We didn't have any reliability issues this year and it was a dream race for us," he said.

"A big, big thanks to all the people at Lola for designing such a terrific sports car."

Jonny Kane was also full of praise for the Lola LMP2 Coupe.

"I have driven a few Lola's in my career but this is without doubt the best of the lot, he said."

Lola spokesman Sam Smith said: "This is the best result at Le Mans for Lola since 1977 - fourth place is brilliant.

"The people who work for Lola in Huntingdon are extremely proud of the achievement. And they should be - the people who work here are the people who make it happen on the track."

The race was dominated by the two Peugeot teams, who secured a 1-2 finish ahead of Audi in third. The Lola Aston Martin completed 373 laps, nine laps behind the winners.

Hopes had been high for Lola as they went into the weekend with eight cars on the grid, and they did not disappoint, with five cars making it to the finish.

The LMP1 Speedy Racing Team Sebah was denied seventh place by a late transmission problem, though they had been running as high as sixth.

The driving trio of Andrea Belicchi, Nicolas Prost and Neel Jani showed the speed of the Lola sportscar package throughout the weekend, but were denied late on.

Since Martin Birrane took over Lola in 1997, the constructor has designed and built over 60 entries for the Le Mans 24hrs, more than any other constructor in the world. Since 2000, Lola customer teams have claimed five LMP2 class victories at Le Mans.

Lola were not the only Huntingdonshire representatives to make the trip to France, as Hilton driver Stuart Moseley completed his fourth Le Mans 24hrs.

Racing for the Barazi-Epsilon Zytek team, Moseley and co-drivers Juan Barazi and Phil Bennett came home fourth in the LMP2 class.

That result placed them 28th out of the 34 finishers overall, one place higher than the team's 2008 effort.
