Brampton boss Wayne Ambler will resist the temptation to get carried away by a terrific start to the Cambs League top-flight campaign.

A 7-0 drubbing of Hemingfords United last Saturday extended the only remaining unbeaten Kershaw Premier Division run to seven games for Ambler’s men.

Veteran striker Martin Turner hit a hat-trick in the emphatic success which completed a derby double for Brampton, who also beat the same opponents in their August season-opener.

“We’re just a good bunch of lads enjoying our football,” said Ambler. “We’ll just keep taking it one game at a time and hope to keep the unbeaten run going as long as possible.

“Realistically a top-half finish is good for us and I’d be ecstatic if we could make it into the top six. We’re not going to start making bold statements and setting big targets at this stage of the season.

“If we’re having the same conversation after 27 games – rather than seven – I might think differently!”

Turner hit an early opener before Nick Garner and Lewis Miller eased Brampton into a three-goal advantage at the break.

Turner struck again seconds after the restart before Gareth Owens got in on the act. Danny Cain then converted a penalty and Turner completed his treble with the final goal.

Ambler added: “Hemingfords weren’t up to much, but we stopped them playing. Their manager told me he picked the same starting XI which only lost 2-1 to the leaders West Wratting the previous Saturday so that shows how well we’re playing.”

The loss to Brampton was a seventh defeat in nine games for Hemingfords and boss Matt Peacey is hopeful they won’t be dragged into a survival battle for the third successive season.

He said: “We just didn’t turn up against Brampton. It was probably our worst performance of the season.

“It is too early to say we are in a relegation battle. The teams we’ve lost to are either going really well this season or finishing in the top six last season.

“It’s been a tough start, but I do believe we will start to pick up points at climb the table.”

Eaton Socon’s anticipated title challenge has got off to a stuttering start. Mark Spavins’ men were beaten 2-0 by Linton Granta last Saturday.
