They might be stuttering on the pitch, but its full steam ahead off it as Eaton Socon continue their promotion quest.

The club’s Mick George Stadium is undergoing a major revamp to be brought up to the required standard to stage Step 6 football.

But Mark Spavins’ side are struggling after losing four of their last five games in the Cambs League top-flight.

The latest loss came at the hands of Cambridge City Development last Saturday with Socon beaten 1-0 on a day when they slipped below fellow promotion hopefuls Lakenheath in the standings.

Spavins said: “We’re working really hard. A new 100-seater stand is being completed, new dugouts have been installed and a new hospitality unit is in place.

“We’re doing everything we can to bring our ground up to required standard, but we’re not quite doing the business on the pitch at the moment.

“We’re struggling with injuries and our home form has become a real problem.

“We might end up having to replay Saturday’s game, though. We’ve heard Cambridge City Development fielded a couple of ineligible players who had appeared for their first team earlier in the week.”

Eaton Socon Reserves are chasing trophy success tomorrow (Thursday) when facing fellow Division 1B side Houghton & Wyton in the Creake Charity Shield final.

The David Wilson Homes Ground, in Godmanchester, is the stage for the showpiece clash and both teams warmed up with victories last weekend.

Callan Irvine struck twice as Eaton Socon Reserves pipped Fenstanton 4-3. Kirk Kidd and Connor Heaps also found the net.

Jordan Brockett hit a hat-trick as Houghton & Wyton shrugged aside bottom team Hemingfords United. They triumphed 4-1 after falling behind early on.

Alconbury climbed back to the Division 1B summit with a 4-2 win at Mildenhall Town Reserves. Ryan Palmer and Jack Goodall hit two goals apiece.

Huntingdon United continued their promotion challenge in Kershaw Senior B Division courtesy of a derby success.

Jamie Blackwell and Joe Bennett both struck twice in a 5-2 victory at Bluntisham Rangers.

Ramsey Pavilion are another local team looking good to earn a rise in class.

They climbed into second place in Division 2B thanks to a 3-1 win against Wisbech St Mary A last Saturday.

Kyle McPartlin grabbed two of the Pavilion goals with Stephen Hurst also finding the net, but Brampton Reserves’ promotion hopes were dented by a 4-2 home defeat at the hands of Isleham United.

But the Isleham second string proved no match for Houghton & Wyton Reserves in Division 4B.

Adam Spratt tucked away a penalty before Robbie Farrington hit a brace as the locals eased to a 3-1 victory.

St Ives Rangers Reserves climbed to within a point of the Division 5B summit. Jackson Bonny and Jamie Perry hit early goals to set them on the way to a 3-0 victory against Marchester United which was wrapped up in stoppage time by Jack Rayner.

The Rangers outfit have four matches in hand on leaders March Soccer School Academy and are hot favourites to lift the title in their debut season.
