The good times are well and truly back at Great Paxton.

The village club have endured a couple of torrid seasons involving a relegation, a mass exodus of players and the collapse of a team.

But they are now firing on all cylinders again in the Cambs League after storming to the top of Division 3A amid an avalanche of goals.

Tom Hunt’s side have reeled off seven consecutive victories in all competitions, finding the net 52 times in the process.

The latest success – an 11-1 league drubbing of Cherry Hinton A last Saturday – was the most emphatic managed by Great Paxton yet.

“We’ve had two really tough seasons with some awful results,” admitted Hunt.

“Our reserves got relegated two seasons ago after being hit with a huge points deduction after we fielded a player who didn’t realise he was suspended after a Sunday team folded owing money.

“Then we had about 10 players leave from the first team after the second game of last season. That left us in a really difficult position and it was a struggle to get two sides out.

“The only thing we could do was go back down to having one team and we’re now starting to have a bit of success.

“We started the season slowly but things have clicked lately and we’re scoring for fun. It’s great for the lads who have stuck together.”

Jordan Nicholson hit a hat-trick in the double-figures demolition of Cherry Hinton A. He has now struck a dozen times already this season – a tally matched by team-mate Greg Lapare, who helped himself to a brace in this game.

Alex Lester also bagged two goals with Zac Carr, Glen Grimes, Stephen Ritson and Lindsey Smith adding their names to the scoresheet.

Great Paxton are the joint second-highest scorers in the entire Cambs League so far this season with 61 goals – a tally equalled by Division 5B newcomers St Ives Rangers Reserves.

Another local outfit – Huntingdon United – are the hottest shots of all after finding the net 70 times already.

Lee Milton’s side retained their position at the top of Kershaw Senior B Division with a 4-1 win against Steeple Bumpstead last Saturday.

Carl Foreman struck twice with Dom Everett and Tommy Evans also on target.
