Eaton Socon manager Mark Spavins saluted a ‘bit of magic’ as the club completed a county double last night.

The Socon first-team lifted the Hunts Intermediate Cup following a 2-1 triumph against Peterborough ICA Sports in a final staged at Jubilee Park, in Huntingdon.

Their trophy-winning success came only a week after the club’s reserve side lifted the Hunts Junior Cup.

The latest honour was secured by a glorious winning goal from Lee Bassett who lashed in a fierce effort from an incredibly tight angle.

Only he will know if it was intentional. If so, it was fabulous. If not, it was rather fortunate. But it proved to be the decisive contribution of a match which in all truth won’t live too long in the memory.

A hard pitch and the usual high wind at this particular venue made playing attractive football tough, but it is results rather than performances which matter in an occasion like this

Boss Spavins said: “That’s what we brought Lee in to do – score the important goals in big games.

“It was a hell of a strike to win the game and it’s brilliant for the club to complete a double after the reserves won their final.

“I’m not sure if it has ever been done by the same club before, and it’s something we can all be very proud about.

“It was a scrappy game in difficult conditions, but it’s all about winning in a cup final and we managed to do that thanks to a bit of magic.”

Eaton Socon had the better openings in the opening half-an-hour but Richard Kay landed a shot on the clubhouse roof and Ben Wilks fired into orbit.

Opponents ICA proved rather more accurate when Harley Williams punished some defensive indecision by clipping a classy finish over stranded Eaton Socon goalkeeper Andrew Wale to break the deadlock.

Only a goal-line block denied Josh Spavins an almost immediate leveller, but Eaton Socon did soon restore parity as Bassett struck at the second attempt after being denied by a smart initial save.

ICA were the better side after the break, with Wale required to make a couple of decent saves. But the match was settled by Eaton Socon’s only on-target attempt of the second period from the left boot of Bassett.

Eaton Socon will attempt to add another trophy to their collection when contesting the final of the Cambs League Kershaw Premier Division KO Cup on May 1.

They face Lakenheath, who are also their biggest rivals for a third-placed finish in the Premier Division, at Histon FC.

And despite seeing their promotion dreams dashed by issues with the size of their Mick George Stadium pitch, another trophy success would still make it a season to savour.

Eaton Socon squad: Andrew Wale, Joe Keech, Shaun Flack, Josh Spavins, Lewis Gordine-Francis, Richard Kay, Dan Pearce, Neil Morris, Lee Bassett, Shane Fox, Ben Wilks, Luke Dawson, Robert Gooch, Mayson Byatt, Andrew Clark, Ryan Barnett.
