Sudbury 1 St Ives 3
TABLE-TOPPING St Ives travelled to Sudbury for their first league game of 2008 having had a four-week lay-off over the Christmas break.
The first half was a tedious affair both sides having chances and the Saints spending more time defending than they would have liked.
Goalkeeper Suneil Raval was called upon to make several stops and they had right-back Mark Cox to thank for a goal- line clearance.
For Saints, Joe Brennan and Derrick Pope started to cause more problems for the Sudbury defence forcing the home goalkeeper to make some good stops on the ground.
After a goalless first half the visitors came out with more purpose for the second period and Pope was on hand to round the goalkeeper and score the opener.
Saints missed several chances to increase the lead before the hosts made them pay by dispatching a penalty corner.
But St Ives soon hit back when Alex Prestage nipped through to score from an Alex Drummond pass to record the visitors' second.
John Marjason-Stamp was then on hand to tap home the third to kill off the game and record the Saints' 10th straight win.
Tim McGlashan scored for St Ives III as they went down 3-1 to Letchworth III, while St Ives V lost to Letchworth V 2-1 despite Gary Cole's effort.
The ladies had a good 4-1 win in their friendly against March Town. Two goals from Helen Clarke and strikes from Louise Smith and Mel Wood were fitting rewards as St Ives dominated the game from beginning to end.
n St Neots Ladies II emerged 3-1 winners from a tough game at Cheshunt.
Kerry Hagger picked up a pass from Emma Southern to open the scoring and despite an equaliser from the home side, Hagger and a first goal for Stef DeGracia settled the game.
