Opaleye set a new Under 15 Boys best for the triple jump with a 12.45m leap at the recent South of England Under 15/Under 20 Inter-County Championships when representing Cambridgeshire.

That was an improvement of three centimetres on his previous mark, but Opaleye soon produced an even better effort when competing in the Hunts AC club championships last Sunday.

He flew out to 12.52m on that occasion and has consolidated his eighth place in the national rankings for his age group.

Fellow Hunts AC member Ella Reed also produced a fine leap at the South of England event when improving her triple jump best to 9.83m. She is 29th in the Under 15 Girls rankings nationally.

Five more club records fell last Thursday as Hunts AC staged an intra-club meet at St Ives.

Lizzy Harrison was responsible for four of those new bests in one race as smashed the Under 15 Girls, Under 17 Women, Under 20 Women and Senior Women marks for the 150m at the age of just 13 thanks to a 19.5-second performance.

The veteran women’s 4-100m relay squad of Julia Scarboro, Claire Hurst, Jo Abel and Andrea Linnell lowered their previous club record of 59.2 to 57.5 with a fine showing.

Abel also excelled at the club championships last Sunday when setting a new veteran women’s club best in the triple jump with a 9.48m leap.

Willow Bedding enjoyed a fine first-ever hammer competition by sending the 3kg implement out of 22.86m – an Under 13 Girls club record of some nine metres and an effort which put her fifth in the national rankings.

Using the 4kg hammer for the first time, Lucca Bussetil set a new Under 13 Boys club record of 22.12m. He now sits 11th in the national rankings at that age group.

Opaleye’s father, Yinka, has also been in top form lately. He clocked 12.09 for the 100m at the recent Lee Valley Sprint Open Series to equal the veteran men’s club record.

Conall McGinness claimed a fine second place when representing the Midland Counties at the UK School Games. He was runner-up in the 1,500m steeplechase in 4.33.32.
