A KILLER double blow in the dying seconds of their home match with Wellingborough resulted in a fifth consecutive league defeat for Huntingdon Town on Saturday.

The result was harsh on the hosts, who deserved a share of the spoils at the very least, but instead had the game snatched away from them.

Matt Freeman gave the visitors the lead six minutes before the interval, after Huntingdon had missed some decent chances.

Charlie Bowen eventually levelled for Huntingdon after 73 minutes with a header and they went mighty close to taking the lead when Joe Furness’s effort hit the bar.

But Town’s hopes of stopping the rot were dashed deep into time added time.

Jake Newman restored the Whitworth lead in the 92nd minute and there was still time for Jonny Hazell to add a third a minute later, as the Flourmen claimed their first away points of the season.

Huntingdon manager Al Lenihan said: “We battered them from start to finish, but what happened at the end just about sums up our luck. That’s two games on the spin now where we should have taken something from it.

“We’ve been going through a traumatic time results wise and it just shows how cruel football can be sometimes.”

Lenihan’s side, fourth bottom in the table after the weekend’s results, were scheduled to be back in home league action last night against AFC Kempston Rovers before making the trip to Northampton Sileby Rangers on Saturday.

“Realistically, I know we’ve probably blown our title chances,” admitted Lenihan after his side’s six defeat in nine league games.

“But this is a strange sort of league where anyone can beat anyone and I’m still looking at top half.

“I won’t throw the towel in and I’ve got the confidence of the committee here, so hopefully we can start to pick up a few results.”
