Alconbury saw a couple of precious points in the chase for a third successive promotion slip through their grasp last Saturday.

Darrell Clark’s men were stung by a late leveller from local rivals Huntingdon United as their Cambs League derby battle ended in deadlock for the second time this season.

Two teams who had shared six goals back in early October cancelled each other out again on this occasion in a 2-2 draw in Division 1B.

Alconbury twice failed to hold advantages provided by goals from Matt Claxton and George Pearson.

Dominic Everett was the beneficiary of a goalkeeping fumble to hit Huntingdon’s first leveller before substitute Harvey Kitchin restored parity for a second time with a classy late strike.

“We’ve drawn four games now this season and had the chances to win them all,” admitted Clark. “But, if you don’t put the ball in the back of the net, you are going to suffer and that’s what we have found.

“We want to progress as a club and we’re hoping for promotion again this season so we can’t afford to drop points.

“That said Lee Milton deserved credit for doing a great job since taking over at Huntingdon United.

“He made sure his team battled right to the end and they got their reward with the equaliser.”

Milton is masterminding a rapid improvement from a United side who were in crisis ahead of his appointment at the end of October.

They have jumped up six places in the space of a fortnight after bringing up the Division 1B rear.

Milton said: “This is a massive point for us against an Alconbury side who have made no secret of the fact they are chasing promotion. It was a worldy of a goal as well from Harvey in the 91st minute as well.

“The lads have been fantastic. They have listened to what myself and my assistant, Gary Baillie, are trying to instill in them. If they keep doing that, results like this will become more frequent.”

St Ives Rangers were another side to boost their survival hopes at that level with a fine result last Saturday.

Rangers climbed out of the drop-zone courtesy of a 4-0 success at bottom side Swavesey Institute.

Matt Norton, Jamie Freeman, Josh Parker and Olly Khabiri hit the goals.

Buckden have promotion aspirations which were not done any harm by A1 derby success. A solitary Dominic Smith goal earned the points at Eaton Socon Reserves.

The Eaton Socon A team took over at the top of Division 3A.

Damian Chamberlain struck twice in a 5-0 success at Melbourn as they warmed up for a top-of-the-table showdown against unbeaten title favourites Offord United this Saturday in fine style.

AFC Barley Mow continued their breeze towards the Division 3B title with a 7-0 drubbing of bottom side Chatteris Fen Tigers.

Leading scorer Josh Turner hit a hat-trick and Adam Lacey bagged a brace as the Huntingdon side extended their 100 per cent start to 13 games in all competitions.
