Promotion-chasing Eynesbury Rovers need just one more win from their final two games after they beat St Neots Town Youth & Saints 5-0 in the day’s big Hunts derby at home on Easter Monday.

Following Saturday’s 6-0 win against Woodford United, it was a straightforward victory against a St Neots under-21s team that are still finding their feet in the United Counties League. Now Eynesbury can secure second place in Division One with a win over Raunds Town at home tonight (Wednesday) – or at Northampton Spencer on Saturday.

Joint manager Martin Field said: “Today was a massive three points for us and if I am being honest I thought we were totally comfortable throughout the game. The lads reacted to what we asked them to do and I thought we were relentless for the 90 minutes.

“It’s in our hands now, we have a massive game on Wednesday and it’s the biggest game the club has had for probably 14 years.

“We still have a job to do and then obviously we do have the luxury of the game on Saturday. I don’t like to say it’s a luxury but we just need to win one of the two. It’s out of my hands now – it’s down to the boys.”

Eynesbury could have won promotion on Monday if Harrowby United had slipped up in their 1pm kick-off at Bourne Town – but the third-placed side eased to a 3-0 victory to keep their slender chances alive.

At 3.05pm, at Eynesbury, Lee Bassett put the St Neots defence under pressure and the visitors scored an own goal. Rovers, visibly stronger than their opponents, went 2-0 up in the 27th minute when Steven Smith found the net and a crafty dummy from Bassett, the team’s 48-goal striker, set up a chance for Tom Coles to make it 3-0 before half time.

Bassett could have had a hat-trick from open play in the second half but only added one goal to his season’s tally from the penalty spot after Cameron Clark had smashed the fourth goal into the roof of the net.

Matt Plumb is Field’s co-manager. It is Plumb who asked the ex-Biggleswade Town boss to join him at Eynesbury.

He told The Hunts Post: “If Raunds turn up and want to give us a game I still think we will beat them.

“But we can still draw both of our last two games and go up because of our plus 10 goal difference.

“But the ideal scenario is we do it on Wednesday.”
