JOSH McCammon from Warboys narrowly missed out on a podium finish at the Aviva Sportshall UK Championships at the LG Arena in Birmingham.

Finishing fourth in the under-13s boys’ standing long jump, McCammon was the sole competitor from Cambridgeshire at the event and he was lying in third place until the final round.

McCammon, who attends Abbey College in Ramsey, qualified as the Regional and Eastern Counties Champion. He said: “I was very disappointed at first because I lost third place by only three centimetres – and I was hoping for a top three finish. But, after a while, I thought that fourth in the country wasn’t too bad.

“I’m going to try and get more jump training in between my football training and definitely go for gold next time.”

His father, Errol McCammon, told The Hunts Post: “Training had been hampered by a suspected fracture of the foot which he did while training with Norwich City Academy’s under-13s. He also competed in the two-lap sprint but was eliminated in the heats.

“Joshua now plans to target next year’s event, even though he will be an under-age under-15.”
