SIGNING Gavin Strachan was something of coup for St Neots Town and the midfielder admits the move and a goal on his debut got his “juices flowing again”.

Ex-professional Strachan, 32, who is the son of well known former player and manager Gordon, netted the winning goal for Saints in their 2-1 UCL League Cup win over King’s Lynn on Saturday.

He was with Blue Square Bet North outfit Hinckley United before arriving on non-contract terms until the end of the season.

Neots are the 11th club during a career for Strachan - capped eight times by Scotland at U21 level – that has also taken him to Coventry, Dundee, Peterborough, Motherwell, Southend, Hartlepool, Stockport, Notts County and Corby.

And he revealed it was a mutual friend who first introduced him to the Saints.

He said: “Danny Nichols, the first team coach at Corby, also knows Dennis Greene and has told me a lot about what Dennis is doing at St Neots and the plans that he has.”

“Being at my age now, it’s a move that excites me and it gets the juices flowing again.

“Although I hate to use the word – the project they’ve got going on at St Neots – is also really exciting.

“However long I’m here, I want to try and help them achieve their goals.”

A UCL Cup quarter-final in front of a few hundred people is unlikely to be one that Strachan, who played in the Premier League for Coventry in the late 1990s, will remember in a hurry when looking back on his career.

But, nonetheless, he said he enjoyed it. “It was good and I was really impressed with the quality of the players here,” he said.

“A few of them I’m familiar with from the past, having played in the Football League, but I’d never met the guys before, so it was always going to be tricky at first.

“I thoroughly enjoyed myself and it was nice to get a goal as well.

“It’s going to be a case of playing until the end of this season and then I’ll see how I’m feeling, see how Dennis is feeling - and we’ll assess everything then.”

Speaking this week, Neots boss Greene was certainly pleased to get his man.

He said: “I tried to sign him two or three months ago and it didn’t come off.

“But he became available again last week and Gavin is a player that we’d also like to have for next season so, when the opportunity came up, I had to take it.

“He’ll give us a nice calm, steady head in the middle of the park.”
