AFTER chasing Huntingdonshire Athletic Club’s senior men’s discus record all season, 19-year-old Jonathan Edwards finally beat it at his final league meeting of the year.

Competing in the Southern Athletics League at Bury St Edmunds, Edwards hurled the discus 47.45 metres to erase Scott Moreland’s 27-year-old record of 46.60m and win the event by seven metres.

With the discus the last event of the day, Edwards’s throw put the Hunts team half a point ahead of West Suffolk AC for third in the standings.

Earlier, Edwards had picked up a half metre win in the shot putt with a season’s best after winning the hammer competition by almost four metres.

Eleanor Smith had an equally excellent day. The 17-year-old long distance runner started off with a huge 40-second win in the 3,000 metres, finished first in the 1,500 metres by eight seconds, before knocking 18 seconds off the club’s senior women’s 1,500m steeplechase record. She finished off the day by running a leg in the 4x400 metres relay, just minutes after the end of the steeplechase.

Meanwhile, a small contingent of Hunts AC athletes competed in the Peterborough Diamond Games, coming away with two wins and another club record, the 64th of the year.

Sprinter Yann Yao was the clear winner in the men’s 100 metres finishing almost four metres in front of the runner-up.

Running her last track race of the season, Rebecca Pedley signed off in style in the 800 metres with a convincing 2.5 second victory. In the pole vault, Molly Gregorious added a whopping 20 centimetres to the Huntingdonshire club’s under-15s girls’ record.
