A St Ives Cycling Club star is celebrating two British titles in just his third year of competitive racing.

Jason Kierman struck gold in the 12km scratch race and the 15km points race in the 40-44yrs age group at the British Masters National Track Championships.

Kierman’s reward for his fine displays at the Newport Velodrome in Wales is being able to wear the British Masters jersey whenever competing in either event for the next 12 months.

He said: “This is only my third year of competitive cycling, but I had a great winter base on the back of a solid season last year.

“That has allowed me to compete at the next level, but I never dreamed that the Masters Championships would go so well.

“It was the perfect weekend in terms of form, fitness and tactics.

“To pick up two champion jerseys makes it all worthwhile. I was so pleased to be able to win in front of my family as well.

“Making my nine-year old son so proud was an amazing feeling.

“Both my wife and son have had to endure a lot and I have missed many family occasions due to having to go out training. Now it all seems validated.”

Kierman, who trains for up to 14 hours each week, also added a bronze medal in the 3km individual pursuit. Incredibly he was attempting the distance for just the second time. His time would have been good enough to have secured gold in 2014.

Kierman’s next target is challenging for honours in the same three events at the World Masters Track Championships in October.

Ken Rolland won the latest St Ives CC 10-mile time-trial at Sawtry by the narrowest of margins. He clocked 23:37 to pip Jack Burgin by a second with Mike Hoy a further 18 seconds back in third last Wednesday.
