Cogenhoe United 1-1 St Ives Town

A TOP-six finish is still a realistic ambition for St Ives Town despite their indifferent start to the campaign.

That is the view of joint-boss Warren Everdell who believes his side, currently sitting 13th in the table, are still capable of achieving their pre-season goal, providing they can start finding the net soon.

St Ives have averaged exactly a goal a game from 16 played so far and registered only five wins.

And they had to settle for a point from Cogenhoe on Saturday but could have claimed all three had Dan Matson converted a first-half penalty.

As it was, United took the lead on 58 minutes through Karl Bates before Ives drew level three minutes later thanks to a Scott Fielding goal.

Everdell said: “It was unfortunate that we missed the penalty, but the pleasing thing was that we scored soon after falling behind.

“After that we had the upper hand and certainly chances to win it, but just couldn’t put them away.”

Next up for Ives is a home fixture on Saturday against bottom side Desborough which, on paper, looks a home banker – but Everdell remains cautious.

“It’s the games against the poorer sides that we haven’t played well in and maybe let ourselves down a little bit,” he said.

“But it’s early days yet and there’s a long way to go. We haven’t done as well as we’d hoped and that is purely down to not being able to put the ball in the back of the net.

“If we can sort that out, then I don’t see any reason why we shouldn’t still be aiming for the top six as we’re not even half way through the season yet.”
