IT was a breathtaking display of attacking football. In the end, after a few slips, St Neots Town won their promotion to the Premier Division of the Southern League by absolutely destroying a team that had held them to a 2-2 draw earlier in the season.

Ben Mackey and Dan Jacob scored a hat-trick each with Stefan Moore finding the net twice in a game that was all but over within the first four minutes.

North Greenford United simply folded. They had no answer.

Leading goalscorer Moore put the Saints 1-0 up inside 60 seconds and in the fourth minute Jacob ran through a crumbling Greenford defence to make it 2-0 with a sublime goal.

It was 4-0 by half-time after two Mackey strikes and the powerful forward completed his hat trick in the 52nd minute, two minutes after Moore had doubled his tally.

Greene even substituted his two front men then and Jacob finished the job with goals in the 78th and 82nd minutes.

It was exhilarating stuff and, as the news leaked through the Twitter grapevine to the 800-plus Saints fans that Slough were 1-0 down, 2-0 down, and then 3-0 down, the promotion party began.

“When we beat St Ives to win the title last season, I did say don’t be surprised if we do the same thing this year,” said the chairman Mike Kearns, who was a little emotional as the players celebrated on the pitch. “Whether I meant it or not is a different matter. But we have been superb this season - we deserve it, we have played football and we have had great support. Every accolade these boys get they deserve.”

With one league game to go, St Neots have scored an astonishing 113 goals in 41 games. In the end they didn’t need to rely on their goal difference because Slough collapsed at their penultimate hurdle, losing at home to Leighton, but really … a goal difference of plus 77, that’s colts’ football stuff.

So what now Mr Chairman? Well, Kearns was about to start promising St Neots fans the Earth – he may need time to think that one through. But he wasn’t discounting the possibility of another promotion push.

“This is a much harder league we are going into,” he said. “But we’ll see… I’m making no predictions for next year but if we can consolidate, maybe get into a play-off position, both Dennis and I will be happy.

“Dennis is the best manager there is – I have always said that. We are a partnership me and him, we get on like a house on fire, we never argue, we have constructive discussions, and at the end of the day we are a team and we know what we are doing…”

And that is something it is tough to argue against right now.

St Neots will face a Huntingdon Town team, who can still win their UCL Division One title, in the semi-finals of the Hinchingbrooke Cup on Wednesday night. They are at Ashford Town for their final league game on Saturday.
