SUNDAY'S Hunts League Division Five clash between Upwood's third XI and Hilton last Sunday developed into a thrilling run-chase with Hilton successfully defending their total
In a high scoring match, home team Upwood fielded a team of very promising young players, many of whom turned in impressive displays, not least 11-year-old Simon Cafferkey.
Hilton batted first but some fiery bowling from Upwood's Charlie Paxton (3-40) looked set to keep the visitors on course for a low total.
However a brilliant stand of 91 for the seventh wicket between Chris Stubbington (47) and Keelan Seaman (31) got Hilton's innings back on track and a nightmare 62 extras from Upwood allowed Hilton to reach 246-8 from their 45 overs.
Upwood paid the price for two crucial run outs in their reply after they had looked to be in with a chance of making the target.
Paul France (42) and Michael Cafferkey (53) led the home side's response and the crowd were all set for an exciting chase.
Paxton (33) and the young prodigy Simon Cafferkey continued the pursuit of Hilton's total.
However when the youngster was run out for 30 the chase fell apart.
Hilton bowler Adrian Darlow gratefully polished off the tail end to finish with figures of 4-49 as Upwood fell 30 runs short; finishing all out for 216 in 38.4 overs.
