The current Cambs League season can already be classed as a big success for Eaton Socon.

Mark Spavins’ side have amassed their biggest-ever points tally at Kershaw Premier Division level and are certainties to better their previous best finishing position of eighth.

But they’re not about to settle for that notable double. Spavins’ men have their sights fixed firmly on the title after closing to within three points of leaders Great Shelford last Saturday.

A 4-0 success against Cherry Hinton stretched their unbeaten run to 15 league games and cranked up the pressure in the championship chase.

Boss Spavins, in his first season in charge, said: “Three or four weeks ago I might have given a different answer, but we certainly believe that we can win the league now.

“It is not in our hands, but we will do all we can to continue to put the pressure on the other teams at the top of the table. We’re playing well and picking up results consistently.

“It has been a successful season for the club regardless of what happens in our final nine games, but we would love to end it as champions.”

Ryan Whittingham hit the only goal of the opening period against Cherry Hinton before Ben Wilks doubled the advantage early in the second half.

Scott Kingsbury headed a third goal before Wilks added his second and 18th goal of the season.

Joint-boss John Hughes believes bottom side Hemingfords can survive in the Premier Division by winning three of their final seven matches.

United are five points from safety after earning creditable draws in their last two games, including a 0-0 deadlock at promotion-bound Wisbech St Mary last Saturday.

Hughes said: “We had a tough spell, but the last two results suggest we are on the up again. We remain hopeful we can stay up and three wins should be enough to do it.”

James Fieldhouse hit a vital goal as Hemingfords Reserves boosted their survival hopes in Kershaw Senior B Division with a 1-0 victory against bottom side Cambridge University Press.

St Ives Rangers were another team to increase their chances of staying up. A 1-0 success at Manea, courtesy of a Jack Rayner goal, lifted them off the bottom of Division 1B and out of the relegation zone.

A player making his first start at that level made a big impact for Huntingdon United.

Polish frontman Greg Mleczek hit half of the goals in an 8-0 romp at Milton Reserves to ensure United didn’t miss the division’s top-scorer Dom Everett, who was away.

Division 3B table-toppers AFC Barley Mow extended their 100 per cent record to 16 league matches by seeing off Waterbeach Colts Old Boys 2-1. Josh Turner and an own goal earned the points.
