Meechan will swap his career as a maths teacher for that of a professional footballer after his move to League Two side Newport County was finalised late this afternoon (Thursday) for what Saints have called ‘an undisclosed fee’.

It is reward for two terrific seasons on the local non-league scene. Meechan has struck 26 times at Step 3 level for Saints this term after firing 53 goals for Godmanchester Rovers at Step 5 in the previous campaign.

The 25 year-old told the official Newport club website: “I had thought that maybe it was a little bit too late for me to make the step up to the Football League, but I am delighted to have the chance now.

“At the moment I just want to come in and work hard and see where things go from there.”

Meechan watched his new club in action last Saturday when they beat Carlisle 1-0 to move seven points clear of the Football League trapdoor.

He could now be involved in their squad when they travel to Exeter City this Saturday.

County boss Warren Feeney revealed he was struck by Meechan’s desire to make the step up.

Feeney told the club’s website: “I have been impressed with Tom’s desire to play in the Football League and hopefully he can take this great opportunity to make a name for himself.

“Our job is now to get Tom up to speed with the new level of football. He will achieve that by working hard and surrounding himself with the good players that we have in this squad.”

Newport are no strangers to snapping up hot Hunts talents. They also signed Conor Washington from St Ives Town in 2012.
