Six members of the St Ives Cycling Club took up the challenge of mountain biking by competing in the first Winter Series event at Thetford Forest.

Although Thetford is not the most mountainous of terrain, heavy rain had left the ground sodden and many riders came unstuck at the bottom of the many dips, with the less-practised riders being spreadeagled in the mud.

The competitors tackled the two-hour event with gusto with the aim of covering as many laps as possible in two hours.

Of 139 finishers, Paul Rennie was the top club finisher, coming home in sixth position. Andy Wylde came 24th, Greg Simcock 37th and Matt Nockolds 94th. In the ladies' event, Tracey Ibbett came in sixth, with Claire Rennie 21st.
