Godmanchester 147 Bury St Edmunds 151-3

Bury St Edmunds won by 7 wickets.

"THE league leaders were just too good for us," said Godmanchester skipper Bevis Moynan after his side suffered their third consecutive league defeat on Saturday.

Bury's opening bowlers produced swing and movement and after Alex Mutucumarana had made a positive start with 20 of the first 24 runs, things rapidly went downhill.

Mutucumarana spooned a simple catch to gully off Andrew Tweedie and then some accurate and hostile bowling from Andrew McGarry saw him claim the next four wickets for just 28 runs.

The slump continued with Paul Swannell unlucky to suffer a doubtful caught behind verdict and at 75 for 7, 20 minutes before lunch, a very early finish looked ominous.

Moynan (35) and Paul Wilkinson (27 not out) then put on the best eighth-wicket stand for almost three seasons to restore hope for the visiting side. After Moynan's departure the last two batsmen fell to spinner Paul Grayson and Godmanchester were left with a disapointing final score of 147.

Opening the attack, Moynan dismissed Tom Huggins for 24 but then Nick Lee anchored the innings with 69 not out.

Swannell and Moynan each claimed a further wicket, but despite their sedentary pace Bury strolled to an expected victory. Leading by example Moynan was the visitors' man of the match with two for 44 to add to his top scorer's effort of 35 that was his second best ever with the bat for Godmanchester.

Another bright point was Craig Park's first match behind the stumps, although he will now look to improve his performances with the bat. With the bottom two sides drawing their match and Godmanchester picking up a miserly single point they are now just eight points off the bottom of the table.
