Hurdler Liam Hunt claimed a golden double as Hunts AC athletes collected a stack of top spots at the Cambridgeshire Championships.

The local club can now boast 11 county champions following a series of high-class performances at the annual competition in Peterborough last weekend.

Hunt took top-billing among the Hunts AC victors at the Embankment Track as he powered to 400m hurdles and 110m hurdles successes in his first season in the Senior Men bracket.

His triumphs were all the more impressive considering he missed most of the winter through injury.

Zac Hope also blasted to glory over a short distance when taking the 100m honours in the Under 15 Boys section despite only being 13. He will still be able to compete in this age group next year.

The remainder of Hunts AC’s track honours came over further with hat-tricks at both 800m and 1,500m.

Conall McGinness breezed to 800m victory in the Under 15 Boys category while other successes over that distance came from Lucy Waller in the Under 20 Women’s race and Siobhan Skinner in the senior bracket.

There was also a trio of top spots for Hunts AC in the 1,500m thanks to the exploits of Joey Croft (Under 17 Men), Shannon Flockhart (Under 15 Girls) and Rachel Sweatt (Senior Women).

Croft sliced more than five seconds off his previous personal best, Flockhart justified her billing as hot favourite by scampering 150m clear of her closest rival and Sweatt made her first appearance in the county championships a successful one.

Further Hunts AC success arrived in the field courtesy of a talented bunch of hammer throwers.

Declan Rice ruled supreme in the Under 17 Men’s section while Charlie Batterbee excelled to take the Under 20 Women’s spoils.

Tracy Burton was victorious in the Senior Women event and there was a family medal double as her daughter, Mia Fairbother-Burton, took silver in the Under 15 Girls category.

In the process, Fairbrother-Burton produced the first throw of over 30 metres by a Hunts AC competitor in that age group.
