HUNTINGDONSHIRE County under-18s go to Cornwall on Friday night for a midday Saturday kick-off in the second round of the FA County Youth Cup.

Following their brilliant win 2-1 over Suffolk in the first round, the squad will stay overnight in the far-flung south west for the game in St Austell.

Huntingdonshire is one of the smallest county associations in the country – and football development manager Alan Poulain was delighted with the win over Suffolk which rewarded the squad with this trip to Cornwall.

He told The Hunts Post: “It’s the longest journey we could have possibly got and it is a great reward for the players who were excellent against Suffolk.

“We didn’t really expect to beat Suffolk but we went 2-0 up and then survived when they gave us a battering late on.

“Suffolk are a strong county and draw their team mainly from Team Bury – but the Huntingdonshire teams we draw our squad from are doing really well at the moment – teams like St Neots, St Ives, Somersham etc.

“Something’s going right in the county for the under-18s to be doing so well.”

Manager Neil King will take more or less the same players down to Cornwall that were involved in the game against Suffolk.

“There won’t be many changes,” said Poulain. “Neil has managed to put together the kind of squad he has been aiming for.”

The squad for the game is: Jack Goodall and Kieran Evans (Alconbury); Shaun Flack (Huntingdon Town); Callum Walter (Huntingdon Town/Godmanchester Rovers); Brett Wyman (Somersham Town/Cambridge City Res); Chris Hannem (Somersham Town/Lakenheath); Max Roberts and George Last (St Ives Town), Max Avory, Aaron Greene, Luke Shipp and Chae Simons (all St Neots Town); Daniel Chamberlain, James Nespoli, Andy Ofuso and Josh Rust (all Yaxley).

The Hunts Post will have a photographer at the game and will be featuring pictures on the website from Monday afternoon.

A full match report will feature on the website and in next week’s sports pages.
