Veteran Hunts AC athlete Richard Phelan has completed a major medal double at the British Masters Championships.

Phelan leaped to 10.51m in the triple jump and cleared 1.50m in the high jump in the M50 class at the event in Birmingham.

And he was agonisingly close to a hat-trick of medals when taking fourth in the pole vault courtesy of a new personal best of 3.20m.

There was the consolation of two new club records though. His effort was an indoor senior and veteran men’s best.

Clubmate Andy Stowe collected bronze in the M40 400m with a time of 55.47 seconds while Peter Downhill finished fifth in the M45 800m on his return to action after injury.

And the younger generation of Hunts AC athletes have also enjoyed good results of late.

The club’s Under 13 boys and girls teams were both victorious in their latest East Anglian League meeting.

The boys have been nicknamed the ‘Magnificent Seven’ by team manager Catherine Gregorious and they certainly lived up to that billing.

Zac Hope won the 75-metre hurdles ‘A’ race in his quickest-ever time of 14.0 seconds before Joseph Purbrick added victory in the ‘B’ race, also in a personal best of 14.3.

That formed part of a hat-trick for Purbrick who also won the 100m ‘A’ race and the ‘A’ string long jump while Hope added the ‘B’ string high jump to his collection.

George Hamilton-Smith continued his prolific run of form with ‘A’ successes in the high jump, discus and javelin.

Hope, Hamilton-Smith, Edward Cox and Junior Pereira also ended on a high courtesy of 4-100m relay victory.

There were four individual winners from the Under 13 girls with Ella De’Ath doing a 1500m and high jump double.

Hannah Bridges (high jump) and Megan Hughes (70m hurdles) were also successful.

It was a fine all-round effort from them though with 16 personal bests being set in 18 individual scoring events.

Liam Hunt clocked the fastest 110m hurdles time by a Hunts AC athlete for 12 years when winning the Senior Men ‘A’ race in the tighest of finishes in 16.0.

Sprint star Owen King added a new string to his bow in the Under 17 Men section.

He is no stranger to making the headlines over 100m and 200m, but delivered a notable 400m performance in this event. His time of 50.8 sent him soaring into the top 50 of the national rankings.

Hunts AC man Rod McKee won his age category – M45 – in the Littleport Multi-Terrain 10k in a personal best of 37.59.
